The Nevada City Film Festival presents Movies Under the Pines (MUTP), an outdoor cinema experience for the entire family at the Pioneer Park bandshell in Nevada City. Enjoy the fun, inventive, and family-friendly Alice in Wonderland (2010) on their 32-foot screen – Nevada County’s largest outdoor screen! Plus attendees will be treated to a steampunk inspired Tea Party with lawn games, treats and tea. Dressing up is strongly encouraged.

โBecause we are only presenting one Movies Under the Pines this summer, we really wanted to make this an over-the-top party with characters from the film and book in attendance, traditional Victorian lawn games plus modern ones like croquet, quoits, chess, and corn hole, and yummy treats like scones and tea cakes along with English tea servedโ, said Jesse Locks Executive Director, Nevada City Film Festival. โWe want it to have a magical feeling no matter what age you are.โ

Director Tim Burtonโs live-action version of Alice in Wonderland, follows Alice Kingsleigh (Mia Wasikowska) who as a young girl first visited magical Underland. Sheโs now a teenager with no memory of the place โ except in her dreams. Her life takes a turn for the unexpected when, at a garden party for her fiance and herself, she spots a certain white rabbit and tumbles down a hole after him. Reunited with her friends the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), the Cheshire Cat and others, Alice learns it is her destiny to end the Red Queenโs (Helena Bonham Carter) reign of terror. (PG, 1hr 48min)
โThis latest rendition of โAlice in Wonderlandโ is a journey worth taking mainly to see Tim Burtonโs imagination at play. The story is so well-known, but you havenโt seen it done quite in this way before,โ The Examiner wrote in their review of the film.
The Hollywood Reporter shared, โArmed with a smartly reshaped but still reverential script by Linda Woolverton (โBeauty and the Beast,โ โThe Lion Kingโ), Tim Burton has delivered a subversively witty, brilliantly cast, whimsically appointed dazzler that also manages to hit all the emotionally satisfying marks.โ
The festival brings in the largest screen in the county (a massive 32-feet), state of the art projection and sound to create an outdoor movie theatre on the lawn in Pioneer Park.
