November 30, 2021 – In the early morning hours of November 20, 2021, CHP officers were dispatched to the report of a wrong way driver on I-80 eastbound near Eagle Lakes Rd. in Nevada County.  Upon arrival, officers observed multiple vehicles with extensive damage as a result of a traffic collision.

In one vehicle, officers contacted the sole occupant, Michael Kelley, 32, from Antelope CA.  In another vehicle, officers found four deceased individuals, two children and two adults, and one surviving child.

After further investigation, it was determined that Michael Kelley was the cause of the collision and that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Our office has filed charges against Michael Kelley for the incident on November 20th that claimed the lives of four family members.  The charges include four counts of murder.

The gravity of this tragedy is hard to grasp. Our thoughts are with those whose lives were lost as well as the surviving family and friends of the victims.  Our focus is to prosecute this case in accordance with justice and provide support to the victims’ family.

We appreciate the hard work of the California Highway Patrol officers under these circumstances.
