Nevada City, CA – Given that all/most of Nevada County is a high and servere fire severity zone, residents are highly encouraged to prepare for future fire emergencies. CALFIRE reports that Nevada City is categorized in a Very High Severity Zone. In response to this situation, Sierra Roots and the Nevada City Office of Emergency Services are excited to introduce evacuation planning designed for individuals without transportation. This initiative aims to address the unique challenges faced by those who may struggle to evacuate during emergencies, providing essential support and resources to facilitate a safe evacuation for all community members, regardless of their housing circumstances. This workshop is the first of four workshops that the City of Nevada City will host around wildfire evacuations.
On Sat., April 12, at 10 a.m., Sierra Roots and Nevada City will host a brainstorming session at Seaman’s Lodge in Pioneer Park. This gathering aims to devise a rescue plan for residents needing transportation during wildfire emergencies, as well as to connect those willing to volunteer their vehicles.
Sierra Roots, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the homeless population in Nevada City and Grass Valley, is committed to ensuring that vulnerable individuals are not left behind during a wildfire crisis. “We intend to offer rides to anyone who needs it,” stated Tom Durkin, N2N project lead for Sierra Roots. “In the spirit of community solidarity, some of our unhoused folks with vehicles are volunteering to help with an evacuation because in a fire emergency, we’re all in this together.”
The Saturday morning program will facilitate connections between riders and drivers and feature informational materials and speakers.

“Right now, there is no evacuation plan for people without transportation. That’s why we’re having this meeting. It’s all about neighbors helping neighbors,” emphasized Durkin.
Residents are invited and encouraged to register for the workshop through Golden, which is a platform from California Volunteers designed for organizing events. The workshops were made possible by a Neighbor-to- Neighbor grant from the Governor’s Office given to the Nevada City. We made signing up easy by visiting the website link below or scanning the attached QR code. Additionally, this platform acts as a central resource for Nevada City events and opportunities. The event is free to attend; snacks and beverages will be provided.
