NEVADA CITY, Calif. — The Nevada City Public Arts Commission, in partnership with Nevada County Arts and Culture, invites the community to celebrate Pride Month with the opening of Layers of Place, a new exhibition at the City Hall Art Meets the Public (C.H.A.M.P.) Gallery that explores identity, belonging, memory, and the many connections that shape our sense of place.

Nevada City Celebrates Pride Month with “Layers of Place” Art Exhibition

The exhibition opens June 1, 2026, and will remain on display through September 25, 2026 at Nevada City Hall. Community members are invited to attend a public reception at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 1, celebrating the artists, artwork, and stories represented in the exhibition.

Earlier that evening, the City will host its 6th Annual Pride Flag Raising Ceremony at 6:00 p.m. in front of City Hall. The ceremony has become a meaningful Nevada City tradition, affirming the City’s commitment to inclusion, dignity, and belonging for all residents and visitors. Community

members are encouraged to attend both events as Nevada City kicks off Pride Month with an evening of art, community, and celebration.

“Layers of Place” features artwork from regional artists whose pieces reflect the relationships, experiences, and communities that create a sense of home. Through painting, photography, mixed media, and other artistic expressions, the exhibition examines the many layers that connect people to place—family, friendship, history, culture, memory, creativity, and community.

The exhibition also honors the lasting contributions of David Osborn and Charles Woods, whose artistic vision and preservation efforts helped shape Nevada City’s creative identity. Their work and advocacy played a significant role in fostering the vibrant arts community that continues to thrive today.

The C.H.A.M.P. Gallery is part of a broader public art initiative established in 2023 under Nevada City’s Strategic Plan for Vibrancy. Through rotating exhibitions and public art programs, the Nevada City Public Arts Commission works to expand access to art throughout the community, foster civic engagement, and celebrate the creative spirit that makes Nevada City unique.
