For summer 2022, the Nevada City Film Festival (NCFF) presents Movies Under the Pines, an outdoor cinema experience for the entire family, Friday, June 10 at the Pioneer Park Bandshell in Nevada City. Kicking off the series is the 80s classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (PG-13, 1hr 43 min).

It’s a fantastic spring day, and their final school year is almost over. That’s all the reason Ferris Bueller (played by Matthew Broderick) needs to declare an unofficial day off from classes. Concocting a brilliant plan that has everyone but his sister (Jennifer Grey) and the high school principal fooled, Bueller and company head off for a day of outrageous fun in Chicago. With John Hughes in the director’s chair, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is ’80s comedy at its very best. Alan Ruck, Mia Sara, Jeffrey Jones and Edie McClurg also star in the film.

When the film was released in 1986, Roger Ebert gave the film 4 stars and said “the film’s heart is in the right place, and Ferris Bueller is slight, whimsical and sweet,” while TIME magazine wrote “here is a dream as old as adolescence, and it is fun to be reminded of its ageless potency, especially in a movie as good-hearted as this one.”

Opening the evening’s program is a special screening of “A Wild Independence” written and directed by Alden Olmsted, produced by the Bear Yuba Land Trust and features an entirely local film crew. This 25 minute short film tells the story of how naturalist John Olmsted fulfilled a friends’ request and turned an abandoned mining ditch in California’s Gold Country into the first wheelchair nature trail in the United States – the Independence Trail.

In 2020, the west side of the Independence Trail was completely destroyed by the Jones Fire. This event is a fundraiser for Bear Yuba Land Trust to help rebuild the Independence Trail. Filmmakers from “A Wild Independence” will be available for Q&A following the film.

The film festival brings in state of the art projection and sound to create an outdoor movie theatre on the grass at Pioneer Park. Beer, wine, popcorn, and soft drinks are available for purchase. Outside food and non-alcoholic drinks allowed. Outside alcoholic beverages prohibited. Blankets and low back chairs are suggested.

Come early to picnic with your family and enjoy lawn games at 7:30pm or show up when the films start at sunset (around 8:30pm). Every spot in the park is a good one. Tickets $8/Per Person or $30/Per Family (four people).
