Nevada County Reads & Writes hosts writing workshops to celebrate Big Read in Nevada County

February 22, 2021 -Nevada County Reads & Writes presents a Writing Workshop Series for its National Endowment for the Arts Big Read celebration of The Round House by Louise Erdrich on Monday, February 22^nd, March 8^th, and March 22^nd. The NEA Big Read in Nevada County is presented in partnership with the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools and the Friends of the Nevada County Library of with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and Book to Action.

The event will feature local authors such as Wendy Hornsby and Gage McKinney leading workshops on writing based on the themes and style of The Round House by Louise Erdrich. Wendy Hornsby’s workshop on March 8^th will focus on Louise Erdrich’s craft as a writer of fiction to convey a story that rings with truth and credibility as she explores several timeless and universal themes: good and evil, faith and morality, to name a few. Gage McKinney’s workshop on March 22^nd will focus on the intersection of fiction and history, as represented by Louise Erdrich’s The Round House. After brief remarks on the purposes and functions of local history, the workshop will focus on how fictional techniques, as seen in Edrich’s work, can be exploited to enliven non-fiction accounts of the past. The workshop will conclude with a consideration of local and regional topics and resources.

An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.

Nevada County is one of 84 communities nationwide participating in the NEA Big Read from September 2020-June 2021. From February 8^th to March 27^th, 2021 our community will celebrate The Round House by Louise Erdrich with a full calendar of events including book discussions for all age groups throughout the county, several storywalks around the different towns in our area, featuring Nisenan and Native storybooks. Writing workshops will be held virtually to encourage adults and teens to reflect on their own narratives. We will also be hosting several Nisenan cultural programs so we can all learn more about the history of our area.
