Nevada County staff partnered with Bear Yuba Land Trust (BYLT) for a morning of trail maintenance along Hirschman Trail, a popular public trail in Nevada City. Nine County staff plus their family members tackled a bridge maintenance project and removed invasive scotch broom on Saturday, Oct. 10, led by BYLT staff member Brendan Allen.

“It is always an honor for me to work with volunteers who donate their time to improve the trails and habitat that benefit the whole community. The value of open spaces and spending time outdoors cannot be overstated,” said Allen.
Only a mile from the heart of downtown Nevada City, this trail is wheelchair accessible up to Hirschman’s Pond. West of the pond, the trail narrows and meanders through oak woodlands, pines, and grasslands. Located directly across from the Nevada County Government Center, the trail is also popular with County employees for lunchtime walks and after-work mountain bike rides.
“What makes efforts like this so special is seeing our employees give back to their community. They generously volunteer their personal time to support local nonprofits and causes they care deeply about, often bringing their families along to lend a hand,” said County Executive Officer Alison Lehman.

“BYLT works hard to maintain local trails and preserves for public recreation, but we would never be able to achieve our goals if it were not for members of the community who roll up their sleeves and spend a weekend morning volunteering,” added Allen.
The County entered an “Adopt-a-Trail” agreement in 2021 to support the eastern portion of this well-loved local trail. The partnership highlights the role volunteers play in maintaining local trails and keeping them accessible for the entire community.
