NEVADA CITY, Calif. September 9, 2026 – The Superior Court of Nevada County will welcome fifth-grade students from schools throughout western Nevada County to the Nevada City Courthouse for Law Day on September 24, 2026. The event provides students with an opportunity to visit the courthouse and learn firsthand about the roles of the Court and its justice partners.
Presented in collaboration with the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools, Law Day brings together judicial officers, court staff, local justice partners, law enforcement, and educators to provide students with an interactive introduction to the justice system. Students participate in sessions that include a mock trial, courthouse tour, and opportunities to meet and learn from local justice and law enforcement professionals.
Following a successful Law Day event in May, the Court is hosting the program for a second time this calendar year as Law Day returns to its traditional fall schedule.
This fall’s program will also recognize the 250th anniversary of the United States with a focus on the Constitution and the principles that continue to shape our system of government and justice. Under the theme “We the People at 250: The Constitution, Justice & the Rule of Law,” students will explore how the Constitution, the courts, and the rule of law connect to their communities and everyday lives.
“Civics education events in our community, like Law Day, are a unique opportunity for students to learn about the third branch of government and the people who are integral to making it work,” said Presiding Judge B. Scott Thompson. “The court, and the values of Justice and the Rule of Law, is about people – those serving and those accessing the court’s services on a daily basis.”
“Law Day is a vital opportunity for our students to connect directly with the principles of our democracy,” said John Baggett, Nevada County Superintendent of Schools. “By experiencing the courthouse firsthand and participating in the mock trial, our fifth graders aren’t just learning about the Constitution—they’re seeing the rule of law in action. We are proud to partner with the Superior Court to bring ‘We the People at 250’ to life for our local students.”

Civics education is an important part of the Court’s community outreach efforts. In addition to Law Day, the Court partners with local schools through the Judges in the Classroom program to provide students with opportunities to learn about the judicial branch and the role of the court in their community.
