Nevada City, Calif. โ€“ At their Tuesday meeting, Supervisors approved the Countyโ€™s Resource Resiliency Roadmap, a long-term plan to help communities prepare for increasingly frequent extreme weather and improve access to future state and federal funding, including grant funding from the climate bond approved by California voters in November 2024.

The Boardโ€™s action followed two years of community engagement, technical analysis, and collaboration with local organizations, Tribes and agencies. Hundreds of residents helped develop the plan through workshops, surveys, focus groups and public comments. Top community concerns included wildfire, power outages, extreme weather and the rising cost of living, all reflected throughout the Roadmapโ€™s strategies.

โ€œI appreciate the community involvement and having all those groups in one room to do strategic planning. It truly is a roadmap: How do we get from point A to point B?โ€ added Supervisor Sue Hoek.

The Board emphasized that the Roadmap is not a mandate and does not introduce new regulations. Instead, it provides strategic direction to help the County access critical funding and partnerships.

โ€œWhat’s good for the environment is usually good for the pocketbook. When you save gas, save electricity, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve the quality of your natural environment, you save money,โ€ said Supervisor Hardy Bullock.

Approval of the Roadmap positions Nevada County to better compete for State and federal grants that require an adopted climate or resilience plan. Implementation will follow a phased approach over the next 20 years, with an initial focus on the next decade, beginning with measures that address urgent risks and build foundational capacity through potential future projects such as:

  • helping homeowners improve energy efficiency and prepare for outages
  • establishing community resilience hubs during extreme weather
  • strengthening watersheds and water systems
  • expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure

With the Roadmap formally adopted, County staff will begin establishing working groups, pursuing funding opportunities and initiating early-phase actions.
