Mary Lett Kober’s “Rooted in Color” invites awe and makes time stop.
It all started when she saw an oak that looked like it was tiptoeing through the forest. She began to see botanical gestures everywhere – reaching, bracing, huddling, leaping, dancing. Amazing trees!
Her compositions and layered rich color tones beautifully solidify the intimacy of a moment in time. Throughout this exhibit, there is a sense of power and grace.
This new series of tree portraits paintings, accompanied by figurative pieces, make up “Rooted in Color”. Kober hones in on what the feel and essence of a moment is, whether that is a woman balancing and pouring a flaming drink or a tree leaning, raising, sinking as it reaches out to communicate with another tree.
Kober has a vast and unique imagination, evident in her fully realized figurative subjects and haunting, humanized trees. She aptly instills her trees with a ‘beingness’, and their lifeforce is undeniable.
She views all life as in motion, always changing. It is through this lens that she paints. She says she is “stopping time in my own way, to capture life’s fleeting moments to express our shared human experiences. Memory, observation and imagination are the tools I use to build places I want to go and states of being I want to share but can’t quite put words to.” This new botanical series is giving her new ways, beyond figurative subjects, to create emotional context, express gesture, and celebrate imagination.
“Rooted in Color” is showing daily in the Nevada City Winery Gallery from August 5 through October 5. An Opening Reception will be held on August 7 from 5:30-7:30.
