October 25, 2017 – At approximately 4:40 am Sunday morning 10/22/17, a Yuba County Deputy was involved in an Officer Involved Shooting with a single suspect in a vehicle in the area of Meadow Avenue in Olivehurst. The suspect, identified as Adam Gibbs age 26 of Marysville, had an active warrant for a recent pursuit and was a parolee-at-large. Gibbs was injured by the deputy’s gunfire and was hospitalized where he remains in fair condition. No Deputies were injured.
A fulltime Sheriff Deputy and a Reserve Sheriff Deputy were together on patrol when they witnessed Gibbs in a vehicle that he was known to be driving and which they had been looking for. Before they attempted to pull him over, Gibbs stopped the vehicle in the roadway. The two deputies approached the vehicle driven by Gibbs to attempt to take him into custody. As the deputies neared the vehicle, Gibbs put the vehicle in reverse and accelerated. The deputy surmised that his reserve partner had been struck and pinned under the vehicle; therefore as Gibbs continued to accelerate backwards despite repeated orders to stop, the deputy fired at the suspect to end what he believed to be an immediate life threat. The suspect also backed into the patrol vehicle, causing major damage. Both deputies were able to move out of the path of the accelerating suspect vehicle and were not injured.
Per department policy, the deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the shooting investigation. Gibbs is expected to be arrested and charged with Felony Assault on a Peace Officer and booked into Yuba County Jail on his outstanding warrants and parole violation once he is discharged from the hospital.
