As a parent of two children at Deer Creek Elementary and the Board President of the Nevada City Schools Foundation, I see every day how much our schools matter—not just to our students, but to our entire community. Our schools are where children grow, discover their passions, and build the foundation for their future. They are also a source of pride for Nevada City.

But while the education happening inside our classrooms is strong, the buildings themselves are showing their age.

Deer Creek Elementary and Seven Hills Middle School are nearly 50 years old. Despite the dedication of staff who work hard to maintain them, these facilities were built for a different era and now require critical repairs and upgrades to remain safe, functional, and supportive of modern learning.

That’s why I’m supporting Measure H.

Measure H is a $26 million local school improvement bond on the June 2 ballot that will fund essential repairs and updates to Nevada City School District campuses. If approved, it will directly address the most urgent needs in our schools.

This includes repairing or replacing leaky roofs and aging water systems—basic infrastructure that should never interfere with a child’s education. It will modernize classrooms and technology, giving students access to hands-on science learning and early career exploration opportunities that reflect today’s world.

Just as importantly, Measure H will make our schools safer. It will improve fire safety systems, upgrade campus security, and reconfigure drop-off and pick-up areas to better protect students during the busiest parts of the day. It will also improve accessibility so that students of all abilities can fully participate in their education.

These are not luxuries—they are necessities.

Measure H was developed through a comprehensive facilities planning process that included input from parents, teachers, staff, and community members. It reflects a thoughtful, locally driven plan to ensure our schools remain safe and effective learning environments for decades to come.

Importantly, this funding cannot be taken by the state or used for administrative salaries. It is dedicated solely to improving our local school facilities, with independent oversight to ensure accountability.

Strong schools benefit everyone. They support student success, strengthen our community, and help protect local property values. Investing in our schools is an investment in Nevada City itself.

As a parent, I want my children—and every child in our district—to learn in a safe, modern, and inspiring environment. Measure H is our opportunity to make that happen.

On June 2, I hope you will support our school district by voting YES on Measure H.
