NEVADA CITY, Calif. October 6, 2016 – Now in it’s fourth season, Paul Emery’s Nevada City LIVE! concert series will bring five weeks of live music and theater to historic Nevada Theatre during October and November.
Paul says, “The Nevada Theatre has become my favorite place to showcase great performers. Since the Gold Rush the building has hosted performers from Mark Twain to Utah Phillips and you can still feel their presence when you walk on stage.”
This year’s series includes performances by Fanna-Fi-Allah, The Earles of Newtown, MaMuse, The Raspyni Brothers, Kimberly Bass, Dave Nachmanoff, Mark Growden, Dolli Melaine and “Painted Mandolin” – Joe Craven’s tribute to the Music of Jerry Garcia.
Also on the bill are theatrical presentations by Sandra Rockman, juggler Izzi Tooinsky’s Kids Cabaret and a special presentation of “Remembering Lord Buckley” featuring Lee Boek, Laurie Buckley, Chris Olander and the Ludi Hendrix Quartet.
“Nevada County has nurtured some stellar talent” Emery adds. “I’ve brought performers to the area from all over the world but, looking back, many of my favorite shows have been by our own performers. This year is no exception.”
Based in Nevada City, Fanna-Fi-Allah plays traditional Sufi music. Through many years of study and practice under the guidance of masters of India and Pakistan, their expression of Qawwali music has become an authentic representation and continuation of this ancient tradition.
Kimberly Bass & Dave Nachmanoff will share an evening with two sets of original music. Bass is a multi-talented singer/songwriter with heartwarming songs, keen lyrical insight and divine inspiration. Internationally renowned songwriter/producer Dave Nachmanoff has shared the stage with the likes of Alison Krauss, Al Stewart, Cheryl Wheeler, Steve Forbert, Firefall, and John Wesley Harding among many others at venues ranging from New York’s Bottom Line to Scotland’s Glastonbury Festival.
In a special evening paying tribute to beat generation icon Lord Buckley, Laurie Buckley and Lee Boek will present “Remembering Lord Buckley.” Lee Boek – known as Brother Lee Love of the Survival Revival Hour on KZAP-FM radio in the late sixties – will join Lord Buckley’s daughter Laurie Buckley and poet Chris Olander with musical accompaniment by the Ludi Hinrichs Quartet.
The nine-piece Earles of Newtown are a powerhouse Americana band crafting tight arrangements of infectious original music around early era Harlem, New Orleans and “Hot” Jazz, along with Texas and Western Swing. The Earls have been shaking dance floors up and down the west coast.
Get ready for Halloween with a Nevada City LIVE! tradition – the cult classic film “Rocky Horror Picture Show” complete with Truth or Dare dance company providing a an all-star shadow cast performance live on stage.
Sarah Nutting and Karisha Longaker are MaMuse. Their uplifting music weaves brilliant and haunting harmony with lyrics born of honed emotional intelligence.
Raspyni Brothers – Barry Friedman and Daniel Holzman – appear annually at over 100 events across America and internationally. Since 1982, their intelligent mayhem has earned them two International Juggling Championships, multiple appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and Jay Leno, and a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Back for a return appearance to Nevada City LIVE is Mark Growden. Growden is a singer, writer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, record producer, visual artist, workshop leader, and the founder and artistic director of The Calling All Choir.
Nevada City native Dolli Melaine is a singer, songwriter, performer and recording artist dividing time between Europe and Nevada County. With a longstanding recording career in Europe, she recently released “SACRED” – a compilation of electronic music songs written with the top Vienna electronic music composers.
Painted Mandolin is a new all-star quartet dedicated to exploring the acoustic side of Jerry Garcia. The group digs into Garcia’s music from his jug band days with Old and In the Way, the Grateful Dead’s Reckoning and his collaborations with David Grisman in the Garcia Grisman Band. The group includes Joe Craven, Matt Hartle, Larry Graff and Roger Sideman.
Izzi Tooinsky is the mastermind and producer of Kids Cabaret, a variety show featuring young performers. Tooinsky is equal parts juggler, clown, comedian, storyteller, and educator. He is the author of two books and creator of seven storytelling CDs. They will be doing two performances on Saturday afternoons.
Sandra Rockman returns with the best of performance art monologues by local writer/actors. Their pieces run the gamut from family history to quirky business clients to personal discoveries in word, and sometimes, music. Also they will be doing staged readings of two contemporary plays Other Desert and Circle Mirror
