February 27, 2024 – Firefighters on the Plumas National Forest Feather River Ranger District are planning to treat approximately 250 acres of hand piles along Dry Creek Road off Oregon Hill Road this week near the community of Challenge.

Conditions permitting, ignitions are expected to start this morning and continue through this week.  Predicted storms later in the week may limit pile burning operations.

Smoke is expected to be visible but not have significant long-term impacts to nearby communities, including Challenge, Brownsville and Dobbins.  Firefighters will be monitoring smoke, with consideration to Yuba Feather Elementary School and the community of Challenge.

Short duration, minor smoke impacts may occur along Oregon Hill Road and neighboring forest roads.  Visibility on roads in the project area may be reduced, especially early in the morning and late evening as smoke settles.

There will also be increased firefighting equipment traffic in the area.  Drivers should use caution, watch for fire equipment exiting and entering area roadways, and possible slow traffic.
