AUBURN, Calif. — Placer County has extended the application period for three open positions on the Placer Sierra Fire Safe Council until Jan. 21.

“The recent storms are a reminder of the challenges that we face living and thriving in and around our wildlands,” said Placer County Assistant Director of Emergency Services Dave Atkinson. “Our fire safe councils are one of the ways we ensure that the unique challenges that our communities face are taken into account as they become more fire-adapted.”

The council represents Colfax, Secret Town, Alpine Meadows, Weimar, Applegate, Clipper Gap, Eden Valley, Alta and Dutch Flat. It’s led by community members who are appointed by the Board of Supervisors and Colfax City Council. Much like a neighborhood watch for wildfire preparedness, members mobilize neighbors to harden their homes and communities against the threat posed by  catastrophic wildfire.

Ideal candidates will have a passion for community wildfire preparedness, interest in being the face of their neighborhood on fire-related issues, comfort interfacing with county officials and the time to commit to an advisory role.

Responsibilities of the position include monthly meetings, supporting community fire risk reduction projects, attending occasional community events, supporting wildfire preparedness outreach efforts and attending the county Firesafe Alliance meetings.

“These council positions are integral to our wildfire preparedness efforts,” said District 5 Supervisor Cindy Gustafson. “People who live in the communities we are working to prepare for wildfire are best equipped to serve as our local advisors. We look forward to working alongside these appointed members to best serve the county on this important issue.”

Applications are now due by close of business Jan 21. Applications can be emailed to placeroes@placer.ca.gov with the title “Placer Sierra Fire Safe Council application.” Appointments will be considered by the Board of Supervisors and the first meeting for the new council members will be in February.
