Grass Valley, CA — September 24, 2025 — The premiere of Rays of Change, a new feature-length documentary highlighting Nevada County’s innovative, student-led approach to discipline, will take place on Thursday, October 9, at 7:00 p.m. at the Del Oro Theatre in Grass Valley. Following the film, there will be a Q&A with the students and filmmakers. Admission is free, but attendees are asked to reserve a ticket in advance to secure a seat.

The film, produced, written, and directed by local talent, Kit Kohler of Riparian Studios, with Associate Producer, Marlene Marhurin, tells the story of RAYS (Restorative Accountable Youth Solutions). After receiving a Prop. 64 Health and Safety Grant in 2021, RAYS was developed by Marlene Mahurin, Program Coordinator of Intervention Services at NCSOS and Steve Hansen, NJUHSD Restorative Practices Coordinator. RAYS is a groundbreaking student-led alternative to suspension program. Instead of removing students from class with off-campus suspension, RAYS empowers trained student teams to lead restorative circles, design restorative plans, and provide peer support—helping students stay connected to their school community while taking responsibility for their actions.

Since its launch, RAYS has supported more than 250 students at Lyman Gilmore Middle School, Bear River High School, Nevada Union High School, and Silver Springs High School. The program continues to grow with statewide recognition and new grant funding, including a highly competitive $1 million award through the Children’s Partnership Peer-to-Peer initiative.

RAYS of Change Movie Premiere

Rays of Change captures the voices of the students leading this work and the impact it has on all involved,” says Marlene Mahurin. “It’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible when young people are given the tools and trust to support each other. I am so proud of what we have created in Nevada County and proud of every student committed to this process.”

The documentary premiere offers the community a chance to witness student stories and learn how restorative practices are supporting local schools and inspiring statewide change. The Q&A with the students and filmmakers following the film allows for further dialogue about the program. All are welcome, although seating is limited.

For those unable to attend the premiere, the film will be available for a limited time online on October 10 at https://nevco.org/rays/.
