Saturday December 14, 9 am to 4:30 pm

Our traditional Saturday morning wild mushroom hunt and identification will wrap up with an afternoon of displayed discoveries and identification workshops. PLEASE NOTE: Online pre-registration is required to attend this event. Register online at www.YubaWatershedInstitute.org/register.

Bring a bagged lunch and be prepared to walk in the damp woods. Other useful items to bring include a collection basket, waxed paper bags, knife, and hand lens. Please carpool if possible. This is a rain or shine event.

Following the collection foray, we’ll convene at the Shady Creek Outdoor School and Event Center for identification discussions, fungi-related presentations, and educational workshops. There will be wild mushroom soups and other food and merchandise for sale.

Saturday’s Schedule:

9:00 – 9:10 Sign in and Register. Please arrive by 9:00 to ensure time for orientation.

9:10 – 9:40 “Introduction to the Foray” and “Basic Forms of Fungi and Where to Find Them” – Daniel Nicholson, local mycologist and naturalist.

9:40 – 10:15 Foray groups organize and depart to foraging sites in the nearby Tahoe National Forest and U.S. Bureau of Land Management lands.

1:00 -1:30 Leave Foray sites and return to Shady Creek Center.

2:00 – 3:00 “Fungi of Vanuatu” – Dr. Brian A. Perry, mycologist and professor.

3:00 – 4:00 “Mushrooms that Glow in the Dark: Bioluminescent and Fluorescent Fungi” – Alan Rockefeller, mushroom identification expert.

Sunday December 15, 11 am to 4 pm

On Sunday we will host the 9th annual Wild Mushroom Exposition. The Exposition will include presentations, interactive displays, and workshops based on our seasonal Sierra mushrooms. There will be wild-crafted food concessions, mushroom merchandise available for sale, and lectures and workshops that celebrate fungi.

Sunday’s Schedule:

11:30 – 12:30 “Wild Mushroom Cooking Demonstration” – Chef Todd Spanier.

1:00 – 2:00 “Fungi of The Andes Mountains” – Damon Tighe, biologist and photographer.

2:15 – 3:00 “Growing and Restoring with Fungi in the Landscape” – Christopher Hodge, mushroom cultivator.

3:15 – 3:45 “Sierra Mycoflora Project and What We Know of the Sierra Fungi” – Daniel Nicholson, local mycologist and naturalist.

Please be aware there are No Dogs and No Smoking allowed at the Shady Creek Center.

Saturday – $30 general; $25 for YWI members; $25 for children and full-time students

Sunday – $15 general; $10 for YWI members, children, and full-time students
