NEVADA CITY, CA – This August marks the return of the sixth annual Community Academy, a free, 12-week course offered annually by the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) that serves as an opportunity for community members to learn about the role law enforcement plays in the community while giving participants a more in-depth understanding of their own Sheriff’s Office.

“This is an opportunity for participants to gain an inside look at how our Sheriff’s Office operates—insights not usually available to the public,” said NCSO Sergeant Andrew Liller, who leads the Community Academy. “Although much of the instruction happens in a classroom, attendees will also go on fieldtrips, get to explore specialized vehicles and equipment used during major incidents, and practice evidence processing. Our goal is to provide community members with a comprehensive understanding of both the Sheriff’s Office and the broader justice system.”
New this year: On the last day of instruction, students will put their new knowledge to use and review facts and information surrounding a real incident* that occurred in Nevada County. Putting on their detective hats, they’ll attempt to solve the case. (*Some case information will be altered to ensure anonymity).
While the class is not designed to prepare students for a career in law enforcement, it has been beneficial to students considering criminal justice careers and to those seeking to advance their personal knowledge and understanding of law enforcement and NCSO’s role and responsibilities in the community.
