Nevada City, CA – On the morning of Oct. 10, Sheriff Shannan Moon formally promoted Russell “Rusty” Greene from lieutenant to operations captain as part of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) Swearing in and Promotional Ceremony.

“Rusty has demonstrated professionalism, sound judgment, and the wisdom that comes from extensive years of experience in the field,” said Sheriff Shannan Moon. “In promoting him to captain, I recognize both his past accomplishments and the continued confidence I have in his ability to lead and serve our community.”

As the newest operations captain, Captain Greene brings 27 years of law enforcement experience to his new role. He began working for NCSO as a reserve deputy back in 1998 and transitioned to a full-time deputy by 1999. After five years of service, he briefly transitioned from NCSO to another law enforcement agency in Arizona but opted to return to NCSO approximately 15 months later.

Since that time, Captain Greene has worn several hats, including field training officer as corporal, marine enforcement deputy, detective, Critical Incident Negotiations Team member, Dive Team member (and now present team leader), and search and rescue coordinator overseeing the Nevada County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue volunteers and missions. Before working his way up to sergeant, Captain Greene had an opportunity to work in the Truckee Jail substation, served as patrol sergeant, and later oversaw the Investigations Unit, which houses both NCSO’s Major Crimes Unit and Special Investigations Unit. In his last role as lieutenant, Captain Greene oversaw patrol, administration, and managed crises in the Nevada County Office of Emergency Services.

During his years of service, Captain Greene expanded his education by securing a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice; three associate degrees with concentrations in courts, corrections, and law enforcement; and graduated from the Sherman Block Leadership Institute and the Nevada County Community Leadership Institute.

The Sheriff’s Office extends its congratulations and appreciation to Captain Greene. Along with Captain Greene, Sheriff Moon also promoted four additional employees at the Swearing in Ceremony: Samuel Iliff to correctional technician; Jennifer Duncan to records supervisor; Kyndra Parvin to sheriff dispatcher; and Kathleen Omura to deputy sheriff. Six new faces also joined the correctional officers team: Patrice Perno, Mitchell Henry, Karla Velasco, Brandean Nichols, Jason Krasner, and Nikolas Herbert.
