Join us at Sierra College Music! Spring 2025 enrollment is now open.

Sierra College Music at Nevada County Campus is currently enrolling students in our Spring 2025 Jazz Ensemble and other courses. The jazz ensemble meets at the NCC campus on Thursdays 3:45-6:50pm, from January 27-May 24, 2025.

Auditions generally occur the first week of class and require demonstrated ability to play at least one instrument commonly used in jazz ensemble. While playing proficiency is required, previous experience with jazz is not. The ensemble currently includes students with beginning to intermediate jazz skills.

The jazz ensemble offers an inclusive, supportive space in which our students strengthen their performance and score reading skills, learn some jazz theory, and the basics of improvising. The ensemble director is Justin Purtill, a Grass Valley local, Berklee School of Music alumni, jazz guitarist, bassist, and composer who tours with the Grammy-award winning group Residente.

In Spring 2025, Sierra College Music at NCC is also offering a beginning guitar class with Professor Purtill (Wednesday afternoons), voice classes (Monday & Wednesday mornings), and a Tuesday morning OLLI class on orchestra music. These classes are open-enrollment; no auditions required.

Classes at Sierra College cost $46/unit, and the aforementioned music courses are 1.5-2 units each. Sierra College Music welcomes new and current college students, high school students, and community members, and it’s a positive and affordable place to gain musical experience and training.
