NEVADA CITY, CA – Hats sing and walls talk in The Hatmaker’s Wife, a luminous comedy by Lauren Yee. Part of Sierra Theatre Company’s popular Theater by the Book series, the show will be performed as a staged reading, one night only on Wednesday, July 29 at the historic Nevada Theatre.
The Hatmaker’s Wife follows a young woman who moves in with her boyfriend expecting the comfort of a new home—only to find a house determined to have its own say. As the walls begin to talk, they unspool the story of Hetchman, a retired hatmaker, and his long-suffering wife. When she and his favorite hat vanish, the hatmaker has no choice but to grapple with the fallout. Where did she go? Why does she want a hat of her own? And where did this mysterious golem come from?
“I adored this script immediately,” said director Laura LeBleu. ”It’s funny, wild, and surreal, but with an emotional core that just floored me. We don’t get to see a lot of magical realism onstage, so I’m delighted to share this wonderfully weird play with our audience.”
