Nevada City, CA:  The rockin’ event, Sip ’n’ Song, celebrates its fifth year at Pioneer Park on Saturday, June 27, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., inviting the community to an evening of music, dancing, and festive picnic fun.

2025 sip n song picnic

Sip ‘n’ Song is a family-friendly fun picnic in the park filled with music, dancing, singing, and fun activities to support and raise funds for the Sierra Master Chorale’s (SMC) programs. The bands are Sons of Boogie and a special mash-up with the Feztones + Love Train. Both bands feature members of the Sierra Master Chorale.

InConcert Sierra and SMC are best known for classical music performances, but the organization also branches into other genres. In the case of Sip ‘n’ Song, classical music and classic rock, funk, blues, and many other styles have more in common than one might think because the history of music is one long conversation between genres. The SMC singers who perform both in bands and the chorale demonstrate how passion, creativity, and virtuosity flow across genres and connect musicians and audiences alike.

Sons of Boogie
Sons of Boogie

Sons of Boogie offers a variety of rocking blues and favorite nostalgic hits from the ‘70s and ‘80s. With smooth vocal harmonies and high-energy stage antics, they’re all about getting everyone up and dancing.

Feztones

The “Special Mash up: Feztones + Love Train,” brings the two popular regional bands into a collaboration, creating a high-energy fusion of swinging R&B, vintage rock, funk, and blues, and showcasing the power of genre-crossing musicianship in a fun and energetic show.

Steve Mendoza, SMC tenor and lead vocalist for Sons of Boogie, said, “I love watching everyone enjoying a Saturday evening at Pioneer Park. Sip ‘n’ Song is such a relaxed and fun community event, and everyone has a great time singing, sipping, dancing, picnicking, and conversing. I’m looking forward to another fun party with a purpose.”

Karel Hendee, SMC soprano and on backup vocals and bass for Love Train, which is playing for its first time at the event, said “We are so excited to be playing for Sip ‘n’ Song!”

The audience is encouraged to bring lawn chairs and a picnic dinner; however, no outside alcohol is permitted. Grass Valley Brewing Co. beer on tap, curated wine selections, and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase, along with other treats.

The entire family is welcome to attend, other than the pets (they’ll need to stay at home.) Last year the SMC added more whimsical fun to the evening with a photo booth and amusing props to commemorate the evening. It was so popular, the booth will be back this year. Since this event is a fundraiser for the Chorale, there will be enticing raffle prizes and other ways to easily support the SMC.

The Sierra Master Chorale is a high-caliber community choir of auditioned singers who perform choral music of such a wide variety and high quality that gives the listening audience and the performers great enjoyment. The SMC traditionally performs with the InConcert Sierra Orchestra. The Chorale was founded in 2008 and is a program of the local nonprofit classical music organization, InConcert Sierra, which was founded in 1946.
