Nevada City, Calif. — The Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved a $7 million renovation of the Grass Valley Veterans Memorial Building, a grant-funded investment that will modernize the popular community facility and prepare it to serve residents in emergencies.
Supervisors selected Deacon Construction to design and build the project, with construction expected to begin in August 2027 and be completed in about a year. The 1932 building, which is used for weddings, concerts, fundraisers, sports events and more, will be closed during the renovation.
“The Grass Valley Veterans Memorial Building has been a gathering place for our community for generations, and this investment will make sure it can continue serving that role well into the future,” said Supervisor Hardy Bullock. “We’re making the building safer and more accessible while also preparing it to serve as a critical resource when our community faces wildfire, extreme heat or other emergencies.”
The project is the chief expense funded by a $10 million Community Resilience Centers Implementation Grant awarded in April 2024 by the California Strategic Growth Council, an opportunity made possible in part by the County’s climate resilience objective. The County is sharing the funding with three co-applicants: Gold Country Senior Services, Interfaith Food Ministries, and Aging & Disability Resource Connections.
The money will pay primarily for structural and accessibility upgrades, bringing the facility into alignment with current building codes and requirements. Energy efficient building upgrades, plumbing improvements, parking lot repairs, and other improvements will be included if budget allows.
Supervisors said they realize that the extended building closure will be difficult for community members and hope the advance notice can help residents make changes to plans. The building is not taking reservations for events after May 2027.
