Now in its 28th year, The Altar Show: Renewal & Remembrance returns to the Granucci Gallery at The Center for the Arts from October 23 through November 7, 2025, with an opening reception on Thursday, October 23 from 5 to 7pm. This free community exhibition invites visitors to experience an extraordinary collection of altars and contemporary installations created by local artists, each exploring themes of remembrance, healing, and connection.
Inspired by the Indo-Hispanic Dรญa de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) traditions, the first Altar Show took place in Nevada County in 1997. Since then, it has become a beloved annual event, featuring up to sixty works of art that range from traditional memorial altars to modern, three-dimensional expressions of renewal and reflection.
Each yearโs exhibition includes a community altar, where guests are encouraged to participate by leaving personal notes, photos, and mementos. Admission is free, and tax-deductible contributions are welcome to support this self-sustaining, volunteer-led event.
โThe Altar Show: Renewal & Remembranceโ is presented by a dedicated Board of Directors and guided by its mission: to provide a free, inclusive annual exhibition inspired by Day of the Dead traditionsโoffering a safe space for community members to renew, remember, and reflect.
Join us in celebrating this unique Nevada County tradition that honors the past, embraces the present, and reaffirms the beauty of the human experience.
