NEVADA CITY, Calif. November 15, 2018 – Please join us on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at 3 pm in the Gene Albaugh Community Room at Madelyn Helling Library, 980 Helling Way, in Nevada City, for “The Carols of Cornwall.” Local author and historian Gage McKinney will present a talk about the history of the Cornish people in Nevada County and the 150-year-old tradition of singing Cornish Christmas carols in Grass Valley. The Cornish Carol Choir, under the direction of Eleanor Kinitzer, will perform and refreshments will be served.
Grass Valley’s Cornish Carol Choir revives the tradition of singing music imported by the miners from Cornwall, England. The choir sings a repertoire of Christmas carols that you may have never heard before – or maybe, songs that evoke a warm and familiar memory.
The staff of the Doris Foley Library for Historical Research will facilitate this festive program. The Doris Foley Library contains an extensive collection of books for and about Cornwall. The assemblage of Cornish materials has attracted scholars from Cornwall, England doing research on Cornish descendants in California. The collection is available for public use at the Doris Foley Library for Historical Research including, local newspaper coverage of Cornish traditions, documented through the years, on microfilm which can viewed through two new state of the art ScanPro 3000 microfilm e-readers.
