DakhaBrakha is a world-music quartet from Kyiv, Ukraine, reflecting fundamental elements of sound and soul. The name DakhaBrakha means “give/take” in the old Ukrainian language.

DakhaBrakha

DakhaBrakha was created in 2004 at the Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art “DAKH” by the avant-garde theater director Vladyslav Troitskyi. Theater work has left its mark on the band performances as their shows have never been staged without scenic effects. Having experimented with Ukrainian folk music, the band has added rhythms of the surrounding world into their music, thus creating a bright, unique and unforgettable image of DakhaBrakha.

Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, Russian and Australian traditional instrumentation, the quartet’s astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates a trans-national sound rooted in Ukrainian culture. At the crossroads of Ukrainian folklore and theater, their musical spectrum is intimate then riotous, plumbing the depths of contemporary roots and rhythms, inspiring cultural and artistic liberation. Due to the violence in Ukraine the band canceled their upcoming concerts in Ukraine, but will continue to play concerts throughout the world in support of their country. For their show on April 21, 2022, The Center will be doing a special fundraiser selling sunflowers provided by Foothill Flowers and offering a special text-to-give opportunity for patrons to help support the band and their families.

Don’t miss the opportunity to catch this unique band and support DakhaBrahka at The Center for the Arts!
