Union Hill Elementary continued its cherished tradition of coming together as a school and community to honor Patriot Day with a ceremony of remembrance, respect, and learning.

Seventh grader Molly Peterson opened the event by leading the Pledge of Allegiance, joined by second-grade students signing in unison. Principal Megan Grijalva spoke to students about the deeper meaning of being a patriot: โ€œSomeone who loves their country and shows that through love, respect, and kindness toward others. It means more than wearing red, white, and blueโ€”itโ€™s caring for each other, our community, and showing courage and respect every day.โ€

To honor the guests in attendance, students offered a spirited Bearcat Clap as each was introduced: California Highway Patrol, Grass Valley Police Department, Nevada County Sheriffโ€™s Department, Nevada County Probation, Ophir Hill Fire, Sierra Nevada Ambulance, CHP Air Operations, Marine Corps, Air Force, Yuba City Fire, Peardale/Chicago Park Fire, Reach Flight, and Cal Fire.

The Bearcat Band and Choir led the audience in a moving performance of the National Anthem, followed by remarks from Superintendent Scott Mikal. He reminded students that patriotism is more than a word: โ€œTo love our country is to choose to stand on the side of the ideals our home was founded onโ€”democracy, justice, and liberty, and above all, love of neighbor. Patriotism isnโ€™t something that starts when youโ€™re older. It starts nowโ€”with the kind of person youโ€™re becoming.โ€

The ceremony closed with all students reciting the Bearcat Pledge, a reminder of their commitment to being trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring, and good citizens every day.

Union Hill thanks the many first responders, service members, and community partners who joined in this meaningful tradition, and the Parent Teacher Club for their support in hosting this event.
