March 11, 2020 – The cost of living in Nevada County has been steadily increasing, with prices of rent, utilities, health care, childcare and other necessities becoming harder to manage. Maybe you know someone who is struggling to get by…a friend or neighbor having trouble making ends meet. United Way envisions a community where individuals don’t have to choose between buying food and paying for basic needs. United Way of Nevada County and Interfaith Food Ministry (IFM) distribute nutritious supplemental groceries on the second Saturday of each month.
Although, there are no reported cases of the Coronavirus in Nevada County, United Way and IFM will be monitoring the situation closely and taking necessary precautions to help make sure that food and product remains safe, and that our distributions and volunteer activities can continue.
The program was formed nearly three years ago for working individuals who need help putting food on their table, but are unable to pick up food at local food distributions during the workweek. The program has grown to encompass a larger population; welcoming others to the table, including anyone who needs food but is unable to make it to the food distributions Monday through Friday. Since the program began, over 7200 bags of food, including fresh fruit and produce, have been given out to over 3200 individuals. United Way partner, Interfaith Food Ministry, distributes food Mon/Wed/Fri from 10am-1pm and the Food Bank of Nevada County provides food at five locations throughout the month.
United Way of Nevada County strives to assure individuals and families in Nevada County are able to meet their basic need for food, emergency shelter and access to health care. Interfaith Food Ministry works to reduce food insecurity in Western Nevada County. They feed the hungry, helping to sustain good health and human dignity. The distributions take place at 440 Henderson Street, in Grass Valley, from 10am-noon on the 2nd Saturday of each month. For more information contact United Way at 274-8111 or admin@uwnc.org.
