Yuba City, CA – The Yuba-Sutter Farm Bureau (YSFB) Fund for Ag Education (FAE) Scholarship Program recognizes graduating high school seniors who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, community involvement, and a strong commitment to pursuing higher education. We are excited to announce that this year the YSFB selected 28 students from local high schools for a range of awards totaling $90,000.00 in scholarship funds. Additionally, our Young Farmers & Ranchers (YF&R) Committee awarded $2,100 in scholarships to three graduating seniors that plan to pursue a career in agriculture and that have strived to make a difference in their community.
The scholarship committee comprised of YSFB board members, community members and staff interviewed dozens of applicants over the course of four days. There were students from eight area schools that interviewed with the committee and earned awards ranging from $500 to the top award of $20,000! While 17 of the 28 applicants are pursuing agriculture related majors, the scholarships are not exclusive to such, nor are they solely awarded to students attending traditional higher education institutions and can be used by students for vocational training as well. Fields of study ranged from Ag Business, Education and Animal Science, to Pre-med, and both Civil and Bio Engineering, with one student even heading to Aviation School! Of the eight high schools represented, East Nicolaus led the count of applicants at seven students, followed by Lindhurst and Sutter High Schools with five students each.
One exceptional candidate, Addisen Cole of East Nicolaus, was selected by the committee for the $20,000 David Burroughs Memorial Scholarship. “This year’s scholarship recipients represent the very best of our local agricultural community,” said Sy Honig YSFB Board Member and Chair of the Scholarship Committee. “We are especially proud to continue honoring Dave Burroughs’ legacy through this perpetual scholarship, which supports students who embody his passion, leadership, and commitment to agriculture.” This prestigious scholarship is awarded to a graduating high school senior who plans to pursue a degree and career in agriculture, supporting the next generation of agricultural leaders who embody David’s commitment to serving their communities. Cole is slated to attend Oklahoma State University to pursue a major in Animal Science.
Scholarships are presented by YSFB board members at each school senior awards ceremonies where recipients learn of their financial award amounts. “The investment we make in these students today strengthens agriculture tomorrow,” said Brian Greathouse YSFB Board President. “We are grateful to the donors and community members who make these scholarships possible and who share our belief in the importance of agricultural education.”
