WASHINGTON, June 28 2018 – The Department of Homeland Security has begun plans to jail children and parents on military bases, according to media reports. The agency sent a request to the Department of Defense to make room for immigrant families—as many as 12,000 individuals—to be housed on military bases. If there is not space, DoD has been asked to construct tent cities in four different states that could hold up to 4,000 people each.
Lorella Praeli, director of immigration policy and campaigns at the American Civil Liberties Union, had the following response:
“This is the Trump administration’s next cruel plot—to imprison children and parents in military bases and tent cities. Under Trump, each new day brings forward a new attack to immigrants’ constitutional rights. Families do not belong in detention—Period.”
