In a groundbreaking collaboration, Luminous Minds Inc and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Sierra have joined forces to launch an innovative literacy-based mentorship program known as LumiPals. This initiative aims to support primary-aged students (K-3rd) in developing socio-emotional skills and enhancing reading achievement. With its focus on individualized tutoring and mentorship, LumiPals is set to make a profound impact on the educational landscape of our community.
LumiPals operates on the principle that every child deserves the opportunity to excel academically and thrive emotionally. Through weekly 1-on-1 sessions, affectionately termed as ‘Littles’ and ‘Bigs’ engagements, young learners receive personalized support tailored to their unique needs. This structured approach fosters a nurturing environment where children can build confidence, improve literacy skills, and develop a love for learning.
Chandra Roughton, the CEO and founder of Luminous Minds, is a passionate advocate for educational equity. With over 24 years of experience as an educator, Ms. Roughton has dedicated her career to closing literacy gaps and empowering students to reach their full potential. Her vision for LumiPals is rooted in the belief that every child deserves access to high-quality education and mentorship opportunities.
“In the very first meeting Chandra and I had, I learned some very unsettling facts about childhood literacy and the subsequent outcomes that have increased my passion for designing and implementing this program,” says Susie Michaels, Program Manager for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Sierra. “Children not reading proficiently by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school, have increased social, emotional, and behavioral challenges, and higher rates of incarceration.”
The impact of LumiPals extends far beyond academic achievement. By pairing students with caring mentors, the program instills a sense of belonging and support that transcends the classroom. Through engaging activities and mentorship sessions, children gain valuable life skills, boost their self-esteem, and develop a growth mindset essential for success.
As the program gains momentum, the need for volunteers becomes increasingly critical. Individuals from all walks of life are encouraged to step forward for just one hour a week and make a difference in the lives of young learners. Whether you’re a parent, educator, or community member, there’s a role for everyone in the LumiPals family.
“We all get by with a little help from our friends,” says Michaels. “That is one of my favorite things about living in Nevada Countyโthe community and support. We need your support in building up these kids. Help us build up the future of Nevada County.”
Volunteers for LumiPals have the opportunity to become mentors, providing guidance and support to students as they navigate their educational journey. With a structured site-based program and set start and end times, volunteering with LumiPals offers a rewarding and impactful way to give back to the community.
In addition to volunteer opportunities, Luminous Minds and Big Brothers Big Sisters welcome partnerships with schools, educational institutions, and other organizations dedicated to promoting literacy and mentorship. Together, we can create a brighter future for our children and our community.
