Nevada Union is a place known for its diverse, boisterous home to athletes, artists, dancers, singers, and so much more. As an establishment that has seen several generations of Nevada County residents, it has become much more than just a high school; it has become a pillar of our community.

In recent years, NU has found yet another way to deepen its school pride and unity throughout campus by creating M.A.D. Game. M.A.D. Game, or Make a Difference Game, is a special sporting event dedicated to the robust special education program. Although the concept of M.A.D. Game did not originate at NU, its impact has been profound and impactful on not only the special education students, but the student body as a whole. Mariah Lang, Sergeant at Arms on Nevada Unionโ€™s Executive Council, is the kind heart responsible for bringing this special event to her campus. Her journey from first learning about M.A.D. Game to finally being able to implement it at her own school is inspiring. When asked about this journey, she said, โ€œI first learned about M.A.D. Game at CASL, California Association of Student Leaders. โ€ฆ Executive Council is the whole reason Iโ€™m able to bring this event. โ€ฆ I always have people in my corner that are trying to support me and help this event flow as smoothly as possible, and I couldnโ€™t do it without our group.โ€ Mariahโ€™s story shows that meaningful impacts can be made through dedication and hard work. The support she received from the rest of the Executive Council also speaks to the power of strong friendships, and the productive culture shared amongst Nevada Union students.

A sad truth is that, oftentimes, special education students get overlooked or even bullied. Their differences can make them isolated from the rest of their community. This is exactly why the M.A.D. Game program is so important. When asked about the impact she believes this program makes, Mariah said, โ€œItโ€™s not something they get on a daily basis or some of them everโ€ฆ I want to give somebody something to show that they are loved and appreciated.โ€ Mariah’s words serve as an excellent summary of the significance and true meaning behind M.A.D. Game. It is not simply a chance for special education children to play a game, but rather an opportunity for them to feel their positive presence and belonging on campus. By finding engaging and innovative ways to include all Nevada Union students, Executive Council is promoting a diverse, caring campus culture that is so crucial for the overall success and wellbeing of its students.

Living in Nevada County, you often hear about the great history of the Gold Rush. The tales of trailblazers who cultivated change in search of a better life. Today, we continue to see this cultivation take shape in the hearts of intelligent, kind high school students – such as Mariah – who are blazing the trail of compassion and devotion to unifying the people in their lives.

This incredible tradition will continue this year! Join us for the fall Make a Difference Flag Football Game on November 6th. The game will take place at 10am in Hooper Stadium at Nevada Union. We hope to see you there!
