On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, Union Hill Elementary held a Patriot’s Day ceremony to honor the brave first responders and remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001. The event opened with Principal Megan Grijalva leading the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the introduction of Superintendent Scott Lay, local and former first responders, veterans, and community service providers in attendance.

Dean Kevin Selby highlighted the significance of this day in American history and guided the community in a moment of silence. Students were then treated to a surprise flyover by a Nevada County CHP helicopter.
Superintendent Scott Mikal and PTC President Kaylani Bush presented appreciation baskets and artwork created by Union Hill students to the honored guests. The ceremony concluded with students, led by Principal Grijalva, reciting the Bearcat of Character Pledge in a display of school spirit and unity.
Union Hill Elementary extends its gratitude to our distinguished guests, including representatives from the Nevada County Sheriff’s Department, Grass Valley Police Department, CHP Air Operations, Dignity Health Paramedics, retired Fire Engineer Jim Michalak, Ophir Hill Fire Department, and Nevada County Probation. Your presence and service made this event truly memorable.
A special thank you to the Union Hill Parent Teacher Club for hosting this meaningful occasion.
29th Annual Cross Country Meet Honors First Responders
Union Hill Elementary School proudly hosted its annual Cross Country meet on September 11, 2024. This year’s event was particularly meaningful as it honored the significance of the date, with athletes paying tribute to first responders. A total of 564 athletes from 23 schools across Nevada and Placer counties participated.

Dominic Albano, a Union Hill fourth-grade teacher and Cross Country Coach, hosted the first meet 29 years ago at Empire Mine. Later, the event was moved to the Union Hill campus where it has continued to grow in size. The meet was supported by a dedicated team, including Coach Steve Barney, Claude Dixon, Union Hill PTC, and numerous volunteers who contributed to the success of this incredible day.
The Union Hill Cross Country meet has long been a staple of the school community, and this year’s event served not only as a competitive race but also as a day of reflection and gratitude for the heroes who serve our communities.
