The potential for any disruption to our country’s voting and election process this November has been a topic of contention for many months. As the November 5 voting day quickly approaches, more and more security measures are being discussed among our country’s elections officials and law enforcement. This month’s Nevada County Community Forum speakers, Nevada County Registrar of Voters Natalie Adona, and Nevada County Sheriff Shannan Moon, will discuss what measures their respective offices and personnel are taking to ensure a safe and successful election process.
This free, one-hour event will be held on Friday, October 18, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 in the auditorium, room N-12 on the Sierra College Nevada County campus. Terry McAteer, former County Superintendent of Schools and Steering Committee member for Community Forum, will serve as moderator of this month’s event.
“According to a recent Gallup Poll, 79% of Americans are concerned about political violence on or after election day,” said McAteer. “To alleviate those fears among residents, we’re pulling together this forum to hopefully address some of the concerns and questions that are on many people’s minds,” he said.
McAteer said that he’s going to ask the tough questions that many people have, including terrorist threats to our elections by known anti-government groups, including the Proud Boys and the Three Percenters.
“I think Nevada County residents would be interested to know what protections and guarantees the elections department has requested from the Sheriff’s department,” said McAteer. “What concerns does Natalie have and what action is Sheriff Moon taking to any possible threats or divisive action to derail our local election process.” McAteer said that these issues are a real concern for this election, not just for Nevada County but for communities and cities across the country.
Sponsored by the Sierra College Foundation’s Nevada County campus, the Community Forum hosts an hour-long, in-depth speaker series several times a year, discussing local issues and topics of interest to both our community and neighboring counties.
The next Community Forum is scheduled for Friday, November 22nd. The scheduled guest speaker is NID General Manager Jennifer Hanson.
