PENN VALLEY, Calif. May 30, 2025 – Rough&Ready and Penn Valley Fire Protection Districts have embarked on the road to consolidation by each Board of Directors voting on a resolution to start the reorganization process. Each resolution was passed unanimously yesterday evening at a joint meeting of both districts.

Penn Valley Chief Don Wagner, also the acting Chief for Rough&Ready, explained both resolutions mirror each other. The documents will be submitted to the Nevada County Local Area Formation Commission (LAFCo) to start the merger of both districts.

The reorganization comes on the heels of a failed attempt at a larger reorganization involving four districts concurrently. Technically, Rough&Ready Fire will annex the lands in the Penn Valley Fire District, then Penn Valley will absorb the Rough&Ready fire station, personnel and equipment. They will continue seamlessly providing fire and ambulance service to the newly formed district.

Both districts request that LAFCO initiate annexation proceedings and approve the creation of the new district on or before December 1, 2025.

Chief Wagner remains in charge of both districts and will lead the application process with LAFCo.

The next meeting of the Penn Valley Fire Protection District is on June 3rd, starting at 6:30 pm at Station No. 43 in Penn Valley.
