In the Sierra foothills and across California, farmland is under growing threat. Rising land values, development pressure, and the aging of the state’s landowning population are converging, putting the future of local agriculture at risk. At the same time, a new generation of farmers and ranchers is eager to grow food and steward the land, but struggles to access secure, long-term land opportunities.
It’s a crossroads moment, and one that calls for real tools, shared stories, and practical planning.
On Wednesday, June 18, the Forever Farms collaborative invites landowners, farmers, and ranchers to an afternoon workshop in Grass Valley: “Securing Your Farm & Land Legacy.” The event will be held at the North Star House from 3:00 to 6:00 PM, with a happy hour mixer from 6:00 to 7:00 PM for further conversation and connection.
The workshop is co-hosted by Sierra Harvest, Bear Yuba Land Trust, and California FarmLink – three organizations working to strengthen farmland access and ensure working lands remain in production for generations to come.
Attendees will hear from experts on three key pathways for preserving farmland and passing on agricultural legacies:
- Farm Succession Planning: What does it take to transition a farm business or family land to new stewards? Common timelines, legal and financial considerations, and resources for getting started will be examined.
- Conservation Easements: Learn how easements work and how they can reduce estate tax burdens while permanently protecting land for agricultural use.
- Long-Term Leasing: Leasing models that provide security for farmers while giving landowners flexibility and peace of mind can be a powerful tool for landowners who want to see their land continue to be farmed but aren’t ready to sell or transfer it.
“I see the passion and drive so many people have to start farm businesses,” said Lindsey Pratt, Farm Institute Director at Sierra Harvest. “But often, that energy gets stuck when faced with the challenge of accessing land. There’s no shortage of skill or commitment – just a lack of secure, affordable land. That’s what we’re trying to change, so that farming can remain viable in our region.”

The Forever Farms initiative was launched to address exactly these challenges. A collaborative partnership between Sierra Harvest, Bear Yuba Land Trust, BriarPatch Food Co-op, Tahoe Food Hub, and Mountain Bounty Farm. The collaboration works to identify and protect farmland from development and subdivision, while helping farmers and ranchers secure long-term access to the land they depend on.
The initiative’s first success came in 2020 with the permanent protection of a 37-acre property on Birchville Road, home to Mountain Bounty Farm—one of the largest vegetable farms in the region. Through incredible collaboration and community support, Bear Yuba Land Trust was able to purchase the land and prevent its sale for development. The land will now grow food for the community in perpetuity.
“Permanent agricultural land conservation, as demonstrated by this model, is one of the key strategies the Forever Farms program is using to help ensure farmers have long-term, affordable access to land in our community,” said Erin Tarr, Executive Director of Bear Yuba Land Trust. “We encourage all landowners interested in conservation or planning for the future of their land to attend this event and learn more.”
Through shared expertise, community support, and a commitment to land stewardship, Forever Farms continues to protect working lands and make farmland accessible for future generations.
For this event, food will be provided by The Ham Stand, a local business specializing in fine, handcrafted salumi sourced from local farms. Their spread will also feature seasonal vegetables from local growers. Beer will be featured from Three Forks Bakery & Brewing Co., recipient of the 2024 Food Business of the Year Award from the Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF), in recognition of their leadership in supporting local agriculture. Wine will be provided by Nevada City Winery. Non-alcoholic drinks will also be available.
