Nevada County families who need a car seat, installation help, or passenger safety education will soon be able to receive free support across the county through a new Child Passenger Safety Program offered by Nevada County Public Health.
Car seats will only be available to low-income residents, but all other services will be available to all.
The program, which kicks off in early 2026, is funded by a $38,525 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The grant program runs through September 2026.
“This effort is about prevention and protection,” said Jessica Ferrer, director of Nevada County’s Mother Child Adolescent Health program. “We know that correct car seat use reduces the risk of serious injury or death for children. Through this grant, we’ll make sure more families have the resources and training they need to keep their kids safe on the road.”
In response to recent community tragedies, the program will also educate families about driveway safety and the danger of leaving children unattended in vehicles.
How to Get a Free Car Seat, Installation or Safety Training
Families can call the location closest to them and schedule appointments starting in Spring 2026. Spanish language services will also be available.

Nevada County Public Health also plans to offer free car seats and installations and community events, including Community Baby Showers, yet to be scheduled.
