Grass Valley, Calif. — This Fourth of July, Grass Valley and Nevada City invite residents and visitors to celebrate America’s 250th Birthday with a full day of red, white, and blue traditions, hometown pride, family fun, and community connection.

As the nation marks 250 years of independence, western Nevada County will celebrate in the way it has for generations: with neighbors gathering in historic downtowns, children waving flags, families sharing breakfast, music filling the streets, and fireworks lighting the summer sky.
Since 1902, the cities of Grass Valley and Nevada City have shared the honor of hosting the annual Fourth of July Parade, alternating the celebration between the two communities. Even-numbered years belong to Nevada City, while odd-numbered years return to Grass Valley. In 2026, Nevada City will host the parade through its historic downtown, continuing a beloved local tradition that has connected the two communities for 124 years.
“This year’s Fourth of July is especially meaningful as we celebrate America’s 250th Birthday,” says Robin Davies, Executive Director of the Greater Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Grass Valley Downtown Association. “For more than a century, Grass Valley and Nevada City have honored Independence Day together. Whether the parade is in Nevada City or Grass Valley, the heart of the celebration remains the same: families, community, patriotism, and the shared joy of gathering in the place we call home.”
Morning in Grass Valley: Pancakes, Children’s Games, and Hometown Spirit
The day begins in downtown Grass Valley with the Annual Family Pancake Breakfast and Children’s Games, sponsored by Twin Cities Church, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on the Mill Street Plaza. This favorite local tradition offers families a cheerful start to the holiday, with a hearty breakfast, activities for children, and the unmistakable feeling of a small town waking up for a day of celebration.
Guests are encouraged to wear their red, white, and blue, bring the whole family, and enjoy the charm of downtown Grass Valley before heading to Nevada City for the parade.
