MCCLELLAN, CA – June 3, 2025 – CAL FIRE will conduct night aerial firefighting training exercises for helicopters at Lake Berryessa (Napa County) and Lake Englebright (Nevada/Yuba Counties) on June 4 – 10. Night flights are scheduled for June 5, 6, 9 and 10, extending into the late night hours until midnight.

These exercises are vital for night fire suppression. They ensure strong coordination and give crews the opportunity to master teamwork, communication and precise water drops in limited visibility.

What to Expect

Residents near Lake Berryessa and Englebright Lake may observe and hear low-flying helicopters from late afternoon, extending into the night hours until midnight on the specified training dates. All flights will be conducted in strict adherence to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and CAL FIRE safety protocols.

CAL FIRE’s Commitment to Night Aerial Firefighting and the Importance of Night Training

CAL FIRE consistently invests in technology, training and resources to enhance its night operations capabilities. The ability to fight fires aided by Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) is crucial to protecting lives and property. By conducting exercises at night, pilots and crews gain experience simulating real-world scenarios.

CAL FIRE appreciates the public’s support as we conduct these training exercises.
