November 9, 2021 – Local people are invited to come to Nevada County Media studios in Grass Valley to be recorded reading a version of “The Nutcracker.” The professional staff at NCM will combine the readings to create a fun video that will be broadcast in December on local cable television and on NCM’s YouTube Main Channel.

Filming will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, in the studio at Nevada County Media’s beautiful, 10,000-square-foot facility at 355 Crown Point Circle, Suite D (behind Analog Devices), in the Whispering Pines industrial area of Grass Valley. The deadline to contact NCM is Wednesday, Nov. 10th. Filming slots are limited and will fill up quickly, so get on the list today! To participate in this fun and creative process, email NCM at www.NevadaCountyMedia.org/contact or call (530) 272-8862. Our office is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

“The Nutcracker” is a classic Christmas story that has been inspiring creative interpretations for more than 200 years. Our reading is based on the original 1816 tale, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by Prussian author E. T. A. Hoffmann. In the tale, a young girl named Maria sees her beloved Christmas gift, a nutcracker shaped like a soldier, come to life and whisk her to a land of living dolls and candy castles. In 1844, French novelist Alexandre Dumas cribbed from Hoffmann’s story to write “The History of a Nutcracker,” featuring a girl named Clara. In 1892,  Russian composer Pyotr I. Tchaikowsky wrote his world-famous ballet based on Dumas’ version.

Nevada County Media’s reading of “The Nutcracker” by local people is being filmed as part of NCM’s yearly holiday storytelling project. In December, look for “The Nutcracker” on NCM’s YouTube Main Channel and on your local Comcast and SuddenLink channels, interspersed among other programs.
