“The Nutcracker” is a classic Christmas story that has been inspiring creative interpretations for more than 200 years. Our reading is based on the original 1816 tale, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by Prussian author E. T. A. Hoffmann. In the tale, a young girl named Maria sees her beloved Christmas gift, a nutcracker shaped like a soldier, come to life and whisk her to a land of living dolls and candy castles. In 1844, French novelist Alexandre Dumas cribbed from Hoffmann’s story to write “The History of a Nutcracker,” featuring a girl named Clara. In 1892, Russian composer Pyotr I. Tchaikowsky wrote his world-famous ballet based on Dumas’ version.
Nevada County Media’s reading of “The Nutcracker” by local people is being filmed as part of NCM’s yearly holiday storytelling project. In December, look for “The Nutcracker” on NCM’s YouTube Main Channel and on your local Comcast and SuddenLink channels, interspersed among other programs.
