Nevada City Calif. – People interested in running for local office in the Nov. 3, 2026 General Election may begin filing candidacy documents starting Monday, July 13. The last day to file is Aug. 7.
A variety of elected offices will appear on the ballot, including seats on city councils, school district boards, fire protection districts and other special district boards.
“Serving in local office is one of the most direct ways residents can help shape the future of their communities,” said Registrar of Voters Armando Salud-Ambriz. “We encourage anyone interested in public service to learn more about the offices that are available and consider becoming a candidate.”
Most candidates should file candidacy papers with the Nevada County Elections Office in Nevada City. Those running for city or town councils should file with their city or town clerk. Candidates for Truckee districts can file with the Town of Truckee clerk.

- Chicago Park Elementary School District (three seats, at large)
- Clear Creek Elementary School District (two seats, at large)

- Nevada County Board of Education (three seats, at large)
- Nevada Joint Union High School District, (two seats, Area 1, 5)
- Penn Valley Union Elementary School District (three seats, at large)
- Pleasant Ridge Unified School District (three seats, at large)
- Sierra Joint Community College District, (two seats, Area 2, 6)
- Tahoe Truckee Unified School District (three seats, Area 1, 4 and 5)
- Twin Ridges Elementary School District (three seats, at large)
- Union Hill School District (three seats, at large)

- Higgins Fire Protection District (two seats, at large)
- Nevada County Consolidated Fire District (three seats, at large)

Candidates should begin by filling out a form at www.NevadaCountyCa.gov/candidateappointments.
If an incumbent fails to file for office by 5 p.m. Aug. 7, a five-calendar day extension period begins during which any qualified person other than the incumbent may file.
