If you are looking to connect with others who give back to our community, then you want to attend a free public showing of “Join or Die”. A documentary about why you should join a club … and why the fate of America depends on it. Followed by a guest panel with members from local service clubs.

HOSTED BY the 49er Rotary Breakfast Club of Nevada City and the Rotary clubs of Western Nevada County in partnership with the City of Nevada City and funded by a grant from the state of California’s Neighbor to Neighbor program.

INFORMATIONAL TABLES: Each club will have members available to promote their organization before and after the movie. Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis, Masons, Evening Star, Oddfellows, Soroptimist, Elks have all been invited to participate in this event. A perfect place to find how best to connect by joining and giving back.

BACKGROUND: In 2000, Robert Putnam published “Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community”. He described the reduction of in-person social interaction which Americans had used to found, educate, and enrich the fabric of their social life. In 2023, filmmakers Pete Davis & Rebecca Davis released their documentary “Join or Die” a film about Putnam’s work by interviewing him plus club members from around the country. Putnam’s follow-up book (2021), “The Upswing: How America Came Together a Century Ago and How We Can Do It Again”, is why we are hosting this event.
