AUBURN, CA – UC Cooperative Extension and the UC ANR Fire Network invites Placer County residents to learn about cost-effective actions they can take to protect their homes and properties from wildfire. The Wildfire Preparedness Walking Tour will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM in Auburn, CA. This event is in collaboration with the City of Auburn Fire Department, Grand Oaks HOA Firewise Community, and Placer County Office of Emergency Services.
Instructors will provide science-based solutions for home hardening and maintenance to protect structures from wildfires. The walking tour will cover:
- Wildfire Preparedness Fundamentals: Participants will learn key concepts related to home hardening and defensible space, along with fire science fundamentals.
- Zone Zero and Home Hardening: Instructors will cover the importance of implementing Zone Zero, or a five-foot noncombustible zone around your structure. Learn about other parts of your home that can be hardened to resist wildfires.
- Fire-Smart Landscaping Best Practices: Instructors will highlight the principles of “right plant, right place, right care,” alongside best practices for pruning and spacing plants, mulch flammability and the importance of working with neighbors.
- Open Space Fuel Management: Attendees will learn about vegetation management strategies for larger areas, such as targeted grazing, thinning, and prescribed fire.
Additionally, representatives from the City of Auburn Fire Department and Placer County Office of Emergency Services will be on site to discuss local ordinances and share wildfire-related community resources available to residents.
