August 28, 2020 – For the second year, as part of the Center for the Arts Fall Colors Open Studios Tour, Nevada County Camera Club will host “Gold Country on Camera – a Photo Challenge”, a competition of western Nevada County images. “We are again hosting this challenge to encourage club photographers to experiment with their photography and be more creative,” stated Kathy Triolo, President of Nevada County Camera Club. The challenge aims at capturing the many views of Nevada County with an emphasis on art and creativity. The resulting photos and awards will be celebrated during the Open Studios Tour, October 10 – 11, at Nevada City Picture Framing, 571 Searls Ave, Nevada City.
The photos for this challenge will all be taken in a 48-hour period during two weekends, August 28-30 and September 4-6 throughout Grass Valley and Nevada City. Participants are restricted to taking photos to a specific area selected for them by a random number generator on the evening before the first weekend. If photographers are seen in local neighborhoods on those dates, chances are that they are participating in the challenge.
For this event, photographers are encouraged to try new techniques and find new viewpoints. Using early morning or evening light, different perspectives, creating composites, adding texture layers, and printing on a new medium are all encouraged. There are no rules other than participants must take their photos within and of their selected location. All entires will be judged by a panel of local professional photographers.
“Last year’s challenge was very successful thus encouraging us to hold it again this year. Due to the Jones Fire and the smoke from other fires, however, the event was delayed. We decided to try two weekends this year giving photographers the choice while also keeping to the theme of a 48-hour photoshoot. If you see photographers in your neighborhood, they may be part of this event. They all will be carrying identification and a card that connects them to the photo challenge. Please feel free to ask them for their credentials if you are concerned,” concluded Triolo.
