Take a tour of the historic 1866 nunnery and orphanage at The Grass Valley Museum’s free lemonade social on Saturday, August 16. The annual event will feature treats, music and, of course, lemonade for everyone. This year’s special guest will be Lisa Redfern, board member of Sierra College Press who will be presenting on local history. The event will also feature a scavenger hunt for the whole family along with screenings of the 1997 short film Mr. Bourn’s Gold set in 1872 Grass Valley.

Free tours of the museum will run throughout the day showcasing the collection of furniture, art, clothing, musical instruments and artifacts from the Victorian era to the 1980’s. One of the newest exhibits features the number one cause of death by dysentery among 1990s fifth graders, an Apple II computer complete with dial-up modem. The unique garden with over 100 heritage roses, trees and plants will also be open as will historic Saint Joseph’s Chapel with its pressed tin ceiling and stained glass windows.
The Grass Valley Museum is open for tours Wednesday through Saturday from 12;30 to 3;30. The museum focuses on the experiences of women and children from the Gold Rush period onward.
