NEVADA CITY, Calif. April 8, 2025 – Despite an exceptionally dry January, precipitation totals throughout western Nevada County are close to the 30-year averages for the area.

Overall, precipitation totals are higher than the 2023-2024 water year, but below 2022-2023 totals. Water years start on October 1 and run through September 30.

The total precipitation recorded for the 2024-2025 water year at the CoCoRaHS CA-NV-1 station stands at 48.01″. The station, located at YubaNet HQ, is part of the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS).

For the Grass Valley area, station CA-NV-36 reports 42.90″, or 112% of normal precipitation.

The Penn Valley area, covered by station CA-NV-50, has received 40.17″ of precipitation, 111% of normal.

Outlook

Near to above normal precipitation and snowpack over the past two water years is maintaining drought-free conditions over Northern California, according to the US Drought Monitor.

According to the NWS Sacramento Office, the Climate Prediction Center’s 3-month outlook is leaning towards below normal precipitation.
