PENN VALLEY, Calif. May 14, 2018 – Sunday morning at 2:07 A.M. the Penn Valley Fire Protection District was dispatched to a residential structure fire in the 14000 block of Pepperwood Drive. When the first engine arrived at 2:19 A.M. the crew found the attic of the home heavily involved in fire. After placing multiple lines in service the fire was knocked down at 3:19 A.M. Heavy overhaul commenced and crews were released at 8:53 A.M. The residence sustained heavy damage, but many valuables were salvaged by fire crews. There were no injuries and the cause of this fire is under investigation.
The occupants of this home were first alerted to the fire by their properly installed and operating smoke alarms. The installation and maintenance of smoke alarms in the home can not be overstated. The Penn Valley Fire Protection District would like to remind all residents that batteries should be changed in smoke alarms every six months or when the manufacturer’s date on the device indicates. The District has a smoke alarm program available for all residents which includes District staff visiting the home, installing smoke alarms if they are needed and changing batteries in any existing smoke alarms. This is free of charge to the resident and the program is funded by the generous donations of our community. Any resident wishing to use this service is encouraged to contact the District office at (530) 432-2630 to schedule a visit.
The Penn Valley Fire Protection District was assisted by engines from the Grass Valley Fire Department and Rough and Ready Fire District and CALFIRE.
