October 7, 2016 – The Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) Wait List for Sutter, Nevada, Yuba, and Colusa Counties will open October 19, 2016 until November 2, 2016. Applications are available online beginning October 19th. To qualify all households must meet the income requirements established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Paper and Spanish Applications are available at FREED (530-477-3333), Hospitality House (530-615-0850) and SPIRIT Peer Empowerment Center (530-274-1431).
For assistance in filling out your application attend the workshop on October 17, 2016 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Nevada County Government Center, 950 Maidu Avenue, Nevada City, CA 95959 in the Empire Room. The Housing Choice Voucher Program is the federal government’s major program for assisting low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe and sanitary housing in the private market. The participant is free to choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program and is not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects.
Housing Choice Vouchers for Nevada County are administered by the Regional Housing Authority of Sutter and Nevada Counties. The Regional Housing Authority receives federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to administer the voucher program.
A family that is issued a housing voucher is responsible for finding a suitable housing unit of the family’s choice where the owner agrees to rent under the program. This unit may include the family’s present residence. Rental units must meet minimum standards of health and safety.
A housing subsidy is paid to the landlord directly by the Regional Housing Authority on behalf of the participating family. The family then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program.
