Grass Valley, CA – Music theory is the language of music, essential for understanding how to read sheet music, compose, play by ear, and improvise. It is the common language among musicians, serving as a shorthand for referring to important points in the music. InConcert Sierra is offering a one-week Creative Piano Theory Intensive with composer and pianist Alexis Alrich on June 24-28 from 10:00am – 3:00pm daily.
The 5-day class is structured for advanced beginner through intermediate instrumental students, ages 12 and above. The course is piano-focused; however, students of other instruments are welcome.
Participants will cover music theory basics: scales, intervals, keys, harmony, sight-singing, dictation, rhythm; and composing original music. It will culminate in an informal recital of student composition projects plus piano pieces from the student’s repertoire.
All classes will be held at the InConcert Sierra office in Grass Valley. The tuition for the weeklong intensive is $200 per student.
Alrich studied composition at the New England Conservatory of Music and the California Institute of the Arts, and received her master’s degree in composition from Mills College. She taught music composition in the Preparatory Division of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music for 18 years and was a founding member and pianist for the San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra. The SFCCO premiered several of Alrich’s pieces, including her Marimba Concerto. A prolific composer, Alexis’ music is published by Alto Publications in Bristol, England. She is also one of the hosts of the radio show “Classics Declassified” on KVMR 89.5 FM in Nevada City, California.
