Created by Let It Ripple and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Tiffany Shlain, 50/50 Day is being described as a day joining ”thousands of organizations, companies, schools, museums, libraries and homes — anywhere people already gather — in a global conversation about what it will take to get to a more gender-balanced world in all sectors of society: business, politics, culture, home, and more. Led by Tiffany Shlain, Emmy-nominated filmmaker and founder of The Webby Awards and her team at Let it Ripple Film Studio, 50/50 Day is based on the model of their annual Character Day, which last year had over 93,000 events in 125 countries and all 50 states.” Over 10,000 events around the world are planned around this historic event.
“We are excited and honored to be a part of this worldwide initiative and together visualize the next steps in becoming a gender balanced world.” says Elisa Parker of See Jane Do, Indivisible Women & Take the Lead. “I think we all felt the power of the Women’s March which happened everywhere,” says Shlain of Let it Ripple and 50/50. “We were out on the street and now bring this conversation to where the change needs to happen; in companies, schools, government and local communities.”
The event will kick off with a 50/50 Rise Up at the downtown Safeway Parking lot off of Mill Street at 5pm. Participants will make their way over towards The Center for the Arts for the program and film. All are welcome and encouraged to wear their favorite Fem Power shirt or patriotic colors and pussy hats.
50/50 Day takes its name and inspiration from the new 20 minute documentary film Shlain has produced, “50/50: Rethinking the Past, Present, and Future of Women + Power.” The film is translated into the 5 most spoken languages in the world (Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, French, Hindi and Portuguese and has closed captions.
